SD Stingrays Hold On To Undefeated Record, Edge SD Hurricanes 35-32 It was the game of the night, heck, it was the game of the season. The SD Stingrays came ever so close to picking up their first loss in three seasons in a rematch against the hungry SD Hurricanes. The Hurricanes came out fired up, determined to avenge their earlier season 50+ point loss to the Rays, and played like champs through 18 minutes. Stingrays quarterback Mike Stange helped them out by throwing two costly first half picks (one was returned by Hurricanes DB Freddy Arcaina for a score) and the Canes found themselves up 20-14 at the half. The Rays started with the ball in the second half and quickly tied the score at 20. The two teams traded blows once more with the Stingrays converting on a two-pointer to take a two point lead. The Canes marched down to the Stingrays goal line at the two-minute warning, but failed to make good on the score. Stange avenged his earlier offensive miscues with a diving interception in the end zone to thwart the scoring attack and change the momentum in his team's favor. "(Stange's) two first half picks were pretty bad," Stingrays center Jason Stratton said. "But he came up with the play of the game with that pick." Stingrays receiver Mike Harvey took the next pass from Stange and jitterbugged through a shell-shocked Canes defense for a 50-yard touchdown and the Rays converted the PAT on a 5-yard pass to Andre Peeples to push the lead to 9 points and effectively end the game. "That was one of the best games (if not the best) we've had in Balboa," Stange said. "Those Hurricanes DBs are very good. Thanks to Lynch and the guys for stepping up and picking me up when I wasn't at my best. (They) made the plays when we needed them." Stange completed 18 of 30 passes for 275 yards, 5 touchdowns and 5 PATs, but also had the 2 INTs. The Rays' LaVon Lynch had the hot hands for his undefeated squad, pulling down 7 receptions for 130 yards and 3 TDs. The win secured the Stingrays' spot in the upcoming Balboa playoffs with one game remaining in the regular season. The #1 seeded Rays will face off against the winner of the play-in game between the #4 and #5 seeds (which could wind up being the Hurricanes) in one semifinal matchup. While the Hurricanes' fortunes turned on three plays in fifteen seconds against the Stingrays, they have earned much respect in the league as a fierce competitor and should be considered a contender for a division championship. Hurricanes QB and team captain Albert Bersley was 22 of 32 passing for 175 yards and 4 touchdowns, but the Hurricanes' "Hats Off" player of the game goes to Arcaina, who not only returned the early interception for a touchdown, but also had 8 receptions for 67 yards and 2 TDs on offense. Code Blue Holds Off Black Tide 27-20 Code Blue took over 2nd place alone behind the undefeated SD Stingrays, pushing their record to 6-2 with two games left to play. Code Blue QB Casey Furtado was able to get the job done on 14 of 25 passing for 156 yards and 4 touchdowns. WR Phill Souvanaphong led Code Blue in receiving with 5 catches for 87 yards and one TD and Rashad Scott was the high scorer of the game with two TDs on four receptions for 22 yards. Souvanaphong also had one interception and a sack on the day. Black Tide standout Bruce Vu was the stud of the game, catching 7 passes for 57 yards and a touchdown while capturing two interceptions and returning one for a touchdown on defense. Pride Parades Past Black Tide 28-13 Pride played a consistent game with few mistakes against the up and rising Black Tide. QB Pat Danyo was 12 of 23 passing for 242 yards and 4 touchdowns and no interceptions. Pre-game, halftime, timeout and overtime smoker Danyo was able to air it out to his two main receiver targets, brothers Josh Denton and Chris North, Jr. for the majority of his completions. North had 3 receptions for 84 yards and 2 touchdowns while Denton pulled in 4 catches for 65 yards and one TD. Pride Blows SD Hurricanes 21-6 The Hurricanes seemed to be out of wind on their second game of the night as they were outplayed, outscored, and out defended by the Pride squad. On defense for Pride, it was all Josh Denton. Denton had three interceptions and returned one returned for a touchdown. He helped contain the Hurricanes to just 93 total yards on 10 for 25 passing. Pride wideout, Chris North, Jr., scored the other two Pride TDs and led his team with 60 yards receiving. Pride has recovered from an early 2-3 start to win four straight games and move up to 3rd place at 6-3. They have a big game against Code Blue next week, with the winner most likely winding up in 2nd place. SD Stingrays Sting Crusaders 66-0 The Stingrays are no joke and definitely not the type of team you want to face when you're shorthanded. The Crusaders had 5 guys and had to play "Ironman" against the #1 ranked Rays. QB Mike Stange picked apart the Crusader defense for 16 of 23 passing, 333 yards, 8 touchdowns and 10 PATs. Deymon "D.O." Owens, LaVon "Mista" Lynch, Mike Harvey and Andres Peoples each caught 2 touchdown passes from Stange. Owens led the Rays with 4 receptions for 120 yards with Lynch close behind with 6 catches for 96 yards. Lynch also had 2 interceptions on defense. Harvey added another interception to his XFF-leading total and Stange recorded two INTs, including one returned for a touchdown on the first play of the game. Crusaders Awarded Forfeit Win Over Mercenaries 6-0 Although the Mercenaries were forced to forfeit due to a lack of players showing up for their game, they were revived by the addition of Stingrays players Mike Stange and Deymon Owens and tasted their first victory on the field. Mercenaries WR Dell Barley proved that he is ready to become a difference maker at the Division 1 level as he hauled in 9 catches for an astonishing 207 yards, 5 touchdowns and accounted for 32 of his team's 42 points. Wide receiver Levi Gordy added a sixth TD for the Mercenaries among his 3 receptions for 39 yards. The Crusaders showed signs of life, with QB Neill Little throwing 15 of 28 completions for 262 yards and 4 touchdowns. Little's primary weapon was USC's own Christian Prosser, with 6 receptions for 127 yards and 2 touchdowns. WR Daniel Holbert collected the other two Crusader touchdowns and totaled 50 yards on his 3 catches. Royal High Takes Down Mercenaries 33-20 Royal High earned their second victory of the season with a "W" over the QB-less Mercenaries. Royal High QB Mark Littrel completed 4 touchdowns and hit on 10 of 21 passing for 149 yards. Littrel was able to connect to WR "Starvin'" Marvin Ramirez 5 times for 81 yards and 2 TDs. Mercenaries' Dell Barley took the majority of snaps for this squad and was able to go 8 of 17 passing for 114 yards and 3 touchdowns. WR Carl Balediata caught five passes for 36 yards and 2 TDs.
